Private Sector Rallies to Aid

The need continues to provide short term relief for the victims of Hurricane Stan.  In addition, the medium and long-term solutions for housing, infrastructure, crop sustainability, schools and other developmental problems will require attention for months to come.

A delegation of representatives from CHEVRON/TEXACO Guatemala and HELPS International met with the First Lady of Guatemala, Mrs. Wendy W. de Berger on Friday, November 18th to present a donation of  144 blankets, 64 portable cots and 355 water purification systems totaling more than US $22,000.    Mr. Estuardo Arroyo,
Manager, Industrial Clients and Mr. Héctor López, General Sales Manager from CHEVRON/TEXACO expressed their concern for the immediate needs of the flood victims and the private sector's willingness to continue providing support.  CHEVRON/TEXACO's donation is channeled through their alliance with the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) --the social and economic development agency of the Organization of American States (OAS)-- in cooperation with HELPS International.

Mrs. Berger expressed her appreciation for the private sector's ongoing commitment and reiterated her appeal for continued support during the long process of reconstruction and long-term development throughout rural Guatemala.  She thanked
the representatives from CHEVRON/TEXACO for their time and efforts, as well as the alliance among OAS/PADF/HELPS International.

The meeting ended with Mr. Juan Carlos Cheves, Executive Director of HELPS International in Guatemala expressing his continued support in relief and development efforts throughout rural Guatemala and his interest in working with the private sector and companies like CHEVRON./TEXACO to attain these common objectives.
